SPARE PARTS (2018)

Spare Parts draws from archival images from the CERN Institute (the European Organization for Nuclear Research) in Switzerland, depicting scientists working on components of vacuum chambers.

To study the behaviour of the universe's smallest particles — the building blocks of all matter — scientists must create an extreme vacuum to prevent accelerating particles from colliding with other molecules. In institutes for particle physics, large vacuum chambers are built to create such a void.

This project features a series of collages and ceramic models inspired by vacuum chamber parts. Through these works, Spare Parts playfully and subtly questions both the human — and the artist's — desire to unravel the deeper layers of reality through science.
