SHELVES (2024) work in progress

Shelves is a work in progress that takes a recently closed antiquarian bookshop as a starting point. Given that the closure of such a store can be seen as symbolic of a broader societal trend. One where spaces that foster spontaneous discoveries—where we come across things we were not actively looking for—are gradually disappearing, partly due to the growing dominance of an online environment shaped by algorithms.

By intertwining photographs of the bookshop—capturing its small details, everyday routines, unexpected finds, and empty spaces—with images from the books that once filled its shelves, the project seeks to keep hold of a place that no longer exists. And to honour the beauty and value of random collections anyone can freely explore.

All photographs will be printed on pages from the discarded books, merging the shop's physical remnants with the visual memories of its past. I am very thankful to have received a development grant from Stichting Amarte Fonds for this experimental process.
